Established in 1881, the University of Connecticut is located in Storrs Connecticut. Storrs is part of the town of Mansfield. The local population as of the 2000 census was 10,996. The University of Connecticut is the largest influence on the area. The main campus is the most dominating presence in the area. Storrs was named to be the “America’s Best Place to Avoid Death Due to Natural Disaster” shortly after the devastation caused in the New Orleans / Gulf Coast region in August of 2005.

The main campus of the University of Connecticut is located in Storrs, CT. There are also regional locations in Avery Point, Greater Hartford, Stamford, Torrington, and Waterbury. There is a Health Care Center that was founded by the University of Connecticut in 1961 located in Farmington, CT. The University of Connecticut School of Law is located in Hartford along with the Graduate Business Learning Center. The School of Social Work is located in Greater Hartford and was founded in 1946.

The enrollment at the University of Connecticut is 20,846 undergraduates and 7,831 postgraduates. Within the university system there are 4,555 members of the academic staff. There are also 4,874 members of the academic staff within the University of Connecticut Health Center.
There are 14 schools and colleges within the University of Connecticut to pursue a degree. Students have 7 undergraduate degree programs with the variety of 101 different majors, 17 graduate degrees with 86 research and practice fields of study and 5 professional degree programs.
The makeup of the student body is quite diverse. One hundred plus countries are represented amongst the student population. Over Seventy-five percent of the main campus student body are residents of the state of Connecticut. One hundred sixty-nine towns throughout Connecticut are represented as well as forty-six of fifty states are also represented in the mix of students.

Tuition costs are indicated in yearly increments. In-state students pay an estimated yearly total of $21,198. Included in that estimated total are tuition, university and student fees, residence hall living, and meals. Out of state students pay and estimated total of $37,662 per year with the same inclusions. These estimated expenses are for the main campus only for undergraduates. Book expenses were not included in the estimated total due to the variation of books needed in each course but you can give an average estimate of $800 per year.

The University of Connecticut’s mascot is the Huskie. The UCONN Huskies participate in Big East Conference in the NCAA’s division 1. The two exceptions to this are for the men’s and women’s hockey teams. The men’s hockey team participates in the Atlantic Hockey Association, which is part of the NCAA’s division 1 but is an ice hockey only conference made up of northeastern regional schools. The women’s hockey team participates in the Hockey East.

This is a hockey only conference with eight women’s teams as participants. These schools are all located in the northeast region. The UCONN Huskies men’s and women’s basketball teams are the most well known of the athletic teams that represent the University of Connecticut. The men’s team is led by head coach Jim Calhoun and he has led his teams to two national championships in 1999 and 2004. The women’s team is led by head coach Geno Auriemma. He has guided his lady Huskies to 7 national championships during his tenure.

The University of Connecticut has ranked as the best public university in New England. UCONN is rated as one of the top thirty public schools in the nation by U.S. News World Report. The University of Connecticut is among the top 35 values for a public university nationally and ranks number one in the New England region.
